The TN immigration status is designated as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) for Canadian and Mexican citizens coming temporarily to the U.S. to perform services in a specialty occupation.

A specialty occupation is defined as an occupation which requires theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge and attainment of a bachelor’s or higher degree for the specific specialization (or its equivalent in experience).

TN application process

For applicants living outside of the U.S. or those currently in the U.S. on a different immigration status.

Step 1: Prepare required documentation
  • Before deciding on a TN for hiring purposes, you must reach out to OISS. This should be your first step before applying for an initial TN or requesting an extension.
  • As a department, make an offer of employment to a qualified foreign national for a TN eligible position.
  • Tell the department contact about the hire and complete the necessary paperwork.
  • Maintain contact with OISS about any changes or questions involving the planned employment.
  • Complete both the Department Request Form for TN Status (PDF) and Prospective TN Employee Form (PDF) – this form includes all necessary supplemental documents
Step 2: Submit to OISS in timely manner

We recommend submitting the completed TN application to OISS at least two (2) months in advance of the requested TN start date. Remember that this application should include all supplemental documentation listed on page 4 of the Prospective TN Employee Form (linked above).

Step 3: OISS reviews and approves application
  • OISS approves application and informs hiring department.
  • The department should then mail the invitation letter to the TN employee.
