As a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you must have a valid travel signature (endorsement) on your DS-2019 to enter the U.S. A travel signature is not required to depart the U.S.

Discuss your plans with OISS before traveling if you:

  • are filing a petition or have application pending with USCIS, discuss your plans with OISS before traveling.
  • have a pending or approved 212(e) home residence waiver (J-1 scholars).
  • will be outside the U.S. for more than 30 days.

Submit the request below to receive a travel signature. We will email you when your DS-2019 has been issued. You must sign your DS-2019 in ink.

Short-term Scholars: Travel signatures are valid for 6 months, or the DS-2019 end date (whichever is sooner).

Professors, Research Scholars and Student Interns: Travel signatures are valid for 12 months, or the DS-2019 end date (whichever is sooner).
