The O-1 visa category is reserved for individuals of “extraordinary ability” in the sciences, arts or education. The documentation required for an O-1 petition is quite extensive, and the decision on whether or not a scholar qualifies for an O-1 visa is often difficult.
The O-1 classifications are commonly referred to as:
- O-1A: Individuals with an extraordinary ability in the sciences, education, business or athletics (not including the arts, motion pictures or television industry)
- O-1B: Individuals with an extraordinary ability in the arts or extraordinary achievement in motion picture or television industry
To discuss whether or not an O-1 application is advisable, contact the Associate Director for Scholars. The Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) coordinates the filing of university-sponsored O-1 applications.
